The Explorer comes with the model’s base engine, a 2.3L inline-4 EcoBoost engine that comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which carries a great balance between fuel efficiency and power. The base trim also comes standard with 3-row seating, which is a great perk to those with families (or a lot of friends) they plan on driving around!
Inside, the base trim is also nicely equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a generous suite of safety and driver assistance features that Ford has dubbed Ford Co-Pilot360.
Explorer XLT
The next trim level up, the XLT, expands on the features and powertrain of the base trim in a way that makes this trim level a great bang-for-buck choice. The XLT comes with second-row captain’s chairs, heated front seats, rear USB ports for your passengers, and an available upgrade of the Explorer’s safety feature suite to the Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist+, which adds great driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist.
The XLT also features aesthetic upgrades like body-color door handles, LED signature lighting, roof rack side rails, and some chrome trim. Additional packages available at this level include the feature-loaded High Package and the XLT Sport Appearance Package.
Explorer Limited
With this trim level, the Explorer starts to become a genuinely luxurious vehicle. The Limited trim offers drivers a choice between the standard EcoBoost engine or a hybrid powertrain, which still packs the power SUV drivers want but with the fuel efficiency of a hybrid. On the exterior, the Limited comes with 20-inch wheels, satin roof rack side rails, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a silver mesh grille insert with chrome bars, so it certainly looks the part of a luxury SUV.
Inside, the luxury trend continues, with leather seating, heated front- and second-row seating, a heated steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, and second-row sunshades. The formerly optional Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package is now standard at this trim, as is a navigation system, wireless charging pad, rain-sensing wipers, 360-degree camera, and more!
Explorer Platinum
The Platinum is the Explorer’s highest trim level, and it shows. The Platinum is also available with a hybrid powertrain, but the non-hybrid option is now a twin-turbo V6 engine. The exterior is stylishly updated with satin aluminum trim and 21-inch wheels, and the interior has added wood and aluminum trim and more leather upholstery. Additional features of the Platinum include Active Park Assist 2.0, which helps you to parallel park, and a digital gauge cluster.
