4 of the best fishing destinations near mabank, txThe town of Mabank, TX is lucky to be near some great fishing spots, with many large reservoirs within easy reach. Not only is there Cedar Creek Lake, and Lake Athens, but there’s also nearby Lake Tawakoni for fun on the water. There’s nothing like spending a day by the water, and these are some of the best places to cast a line.

1. Cedar Creek Reservoir

Every Mabank resident will know the first spot on this list, as Cedar Creek Lake is located right next to the town to the west. Its numerous creeks and inlets provide great cover for fish, and plenty of spots for anglers to cast from. The lake is home to several fish species, of which largemouth, white and striped bass, blue and channel catfish, and crappie are the species most of interest to fishermen.

The largemouth bass are most easily caught in the clear water at the lower end of the reservoir, and hybrid bass are stocked annually. You’re more likely to find blue than channel catfish here, but both species are abundant.

2. Lake Athens

Located to the east of the nearby city of Athens, TX, Lake Athens is home to an excellent bass fishery, and also contains crappie in large numbers. Sunfish are a good target here for those that prefer to fly fish, with some reaching over 10 inches in length.

As with most lakes in east Texas, spring is the best time to fish here, with all species becoming more active as the water warms. The reservoir’s upper end is usually the best place to head to, as more of the floating native vegetation that the fish prefer can be found here.

3. Richland-Chambers Reservoir

Richland Chambers Reservoir is a large impoundment located to the southeast of Corsicana on US 287. The reservoir is one of the best in the area for those looking to catch catfish, crappie, white bass, or hybrid striped bass. Largemouth bass also lurk in areas of clear water provided they can find enough vegetation.

Anglers looking for these fish should try Big Cedar Creek first, and then move on to the Chambers Creek arm. The other species will often congregate in schools where they hunt shad, their main prey. If the schools of shad can be found with a graph recorder or lacking access to this, large groups of aquatic birds are usually a good indication.

4. Lake Tawakoni

Located just south of the town of Greenville, and close to the eastern edge of the Dallas metropolis, Lake Tawakoni is a great place to fish for various species of bass, which can be found in abundance in the open waters of the lake.

The lake is stocked yearly with striped and hybrid bass, and there are also large numbers of largemouth and white bass here. Catfish are also common, especially the channel variety.

These lakes are all large reservoirs and have many smaller angling spots of their own. Visit them for a day by the water, and you’ll soon find your favorite.
